Private Tour on Greek Islands – Mykonos

Private Tour on Greek Islands - Mykonos

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. – Ibn Battuta

Mykonos – Island of winds
Mykonos, often called the island of winds, is a Greek island and important member of the Cyclades, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. The island spans an area of 85 square kilometers, slightly smaller than Santorini. Along side with Ibiza in Spain, Mykonos is also the most famous cosmopolitan island, a paradise in the heart of the Cyclades. Greek mythology has it that Mykonos was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules and the island took its name from the grandson of Apollo, “Mykonos”. There are 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in the largest town, Chora or Hora – a traditional whitewashed Cycladic maze with hip new hotels, chic cafes, bars, boutiques and restaurants.

Navigating the island
Public transportation is hard to come by on the island with very limited number of taxis serving the ever growing tourist (think tens of thousands during summer) and infrequent bus schedules (especially the low season), your best bet is to rent a car, scooter or an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle). It is quite pleasant to drive (or ride) during the off season as the roads are quite well constructed particularly in the western side of the island. However, you do not really want to do that during the high season where traffic is really crazy and navigating the narrow roads has proved to be a big challenge especially you are used to drive on the right back home. The challenge gets even bigger when you starts to drive away from the town where dirt roads with pebbles awaits.

Exploring the island
Using the town as your base, set out seeking some of the iconic locations on the island. Stroll around the narrow marble streets and admire whitewashed cubic houses with colorful doors, window frames, bougainvillea trees and mysteriously-looking churches. Mykonos most famous church and most photogenic spot got to be Panagia Paraportiani, comprises four small chapels plus another on an upper storey reached by an exterior staircase. Pay a visit to the Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums to get to know a little more about the island’s history. Soak up the atmosphere along the lively waterfront and admire a fleet of fishing boats casting colorful reflections in the azure waters. While strolling, see if you can spot the official mascot of Mykonos – Pétros the pelican! One of the most scenic corners of the island is the “Little Venice”, an 18th century district, dominated by grand captains’ mansions with colorful balconies and stylish windows. With balconies perched over the sea, pictures of the famous Italian city spring to mind. Relax at a waterfront café and admire the view of the quaint windmills standing imposingly on the hillside above, set against a luminous blue backdrop. The second traditional settlement of Mykonos is Áno Merá, situated around the historic 16th century monastery of Panagia Tourliani. To the north in Fteliá, lies an important Neolithic settlement and a 14th-13th century BC Mycenaean tomb. Venture further out to discover the beauties of the island particularly its sun-kissed beaches. Along the southern coast you will find a great selection of well-organized beaches famous for wild parties such as Paradise and Super Paradise. Órnos is our personal favorite beach for families. Another well-organized beach – Platis Yalós, where you can soak up the sun lazing on a sun lounge. However, if you are looking for a serene beach to unwind with a book, pick a less organized one on the northern coast of the island, like Ayia Ánna and Ayios Stéfanos. Drop by the old lighthouse of Armenistis standing at about 19 meters in height and still in operation.

Private tour day
Planned and organized according to your preference and our experience, you shall received your personalized day itinerary prior arrival on the island. Our exclusive private tour pick you up from your hotel and takes to you many photogenic locations not reachable by public transportation or impossible to drive without an experienced local driver. You decides what time to depart, when to stop for break or photo or even a swim and have your driver drop off at the desired location. This shall be your personal transport during the tour and not share with others, so possibly the best way to tour the island with comfort and ease of mind. Unlike most travel package catering to mass tourism or unknowing travelers, our services are tailored to your needs and with our specialized vast experience traveling in Greece at your complete disposal.

Tips for visitors
A pair of good walking shoes is needed and sunglass, sun-block lotion is recommended. The wind is really strong on the island, ladies to avoid scarf, hat or anything that will be blown away easily. A decent wind breaker (during the summer) and a jacket during spring and autumn period should suffice.
